Welcome to our page for Year 1 children!
We start this term exploring fairy tales. We will be listening to and re-telling these familiar stories as well as writing our own versions. For history, we are studying Kings and Queens and, in particular, comparing Queen Victoria with Queen Elizabeth II. This links to our Art topic of portraits where we will be learning how to draw the face with the right proportions and experimenting with different materials to create our own royal portrait. This half-term, we will be focussing on plants in science, particularly the parts of a plant and its life-cycle. We will also be investigating what things help a plant to grow well. In computing we will be learning coding and will be writing our own computer programmes. In Maths we will be continuing to reinforce our counting skills, improving our knowledge of place value and learning number facts to help us with our addition and subtraction.

We have created a guide for parents so that you can support your children at home in preparation for the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check. You can download and read the document here Phonics_Booklet_for_Parents.pdf
This half term we will be studying Katie Morag and Iggy Peck. Our wider curriculum work will link to these texts. In maths, we are aiming to secure our knowledge of place value and move into developing our understanding of addition and subtraction. We are looking at ‘the four nations’ to gain an understanding of the British Isles and what makes Britain great. Children will be looking at ‘the four seasons’ in science and they will get to make their very own weather stations!
In P.E. the children will be focusing on balancing skills and general gymnastics. They will continue to have P.E. on a Friday. We will of course be looking at Christmas as a Christian festival as we enter December.
Year One have been thoroughly enjoying discovering all about our very own toy Museum and what toys were like in the past. We have been reading a range of adventure stories such as Dogger, Lost in the Toy Museum, and Whatever Next. We have been planning and writing some stories of our own. In Maths, we have been becoming experts at subitising. This is where we recognise the number of objects in a small group without the need to count them. We have also been exploring ideas to create our very own moving toys with wheels and axles. We are looking forward to using these skills to make our very own toys.
Year 1 Autumn Curriculum
This term our topic is ‘Toys’. Using the text ‘Lost in the Toy Museum’ we will explore and write our very own adventure story. We will be discovering all about toys from the past and comparing the similarities and differences to today’s toys. This will be linked to our Science topic of Materials. We will then apply our knowledge of materials to Design and Technology and make our own toy with wheels. In RE, we will be learning about Christians and their daily lives. During Maths lessons, we are focusing on developing our sense of number by being able to instantly recognise numbers up to 10 without counting.
