Our curriculum this year is: Year 1 Curriculum Map

Summer 1 2022

This half term our cross-curricular topic will be ‘Kings and Queens’. In English, will be focusing on fairy tales and story writing. We will also be learning about the monarchy in History and drawing portraits of the Queen in Art. This will culminate in a Year 1 celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. In Science, we will be studying plants: identifying and naming a variety of common wild and garden plants and describing their structure.

In Maths, we will be exploring multiplication and division and fractions. In PSHE, we will be thinking about how we can keep ourselves safe. We will be looking at identifying different feelings; recognising which adults and friends we can trust and thinking about school and classroom rules that help us feel safe. In PE we will be practising skills that we will need for Sports’ Day. Reading and Phonics are a particular focus in Year 1. Daily reading is vital to your child’s continued development and access to the curriculum. Your continued support in this is essential.

Spring 2 2022

This half term our cross-curricular topic will be ‘Map it Out’. In English, we are learning all about ‘The Jolly Postman’ and will be focusing on letter writing. We will also be learning about mapping, starting off by looking at the Jolly Postman’s route and continuing to learn mapping skills with a focus on the book ‘Follow that Map’.  This links to our Geography topic where we will be learning geographical skills and fieldwork to do with mapping.  In Maths, we will be exploring place value within 50 and measurement (length, height, weight and volume). ‘Animals including humans’  is our Science focus. We will be identifying, naming, drawing and labelling the basic parts of the human body and will learn all about the senses. In PSHE we will be learning about the main external parts of the bodies of humans, including names for sexual parts and know how to keep ourselves clean.

In P.E. lessons this half term, we will be looking at gymnastics and bat and ball skills. In Art we will be exploring clay and making pots.

Reading and Phonics are a particular focus in Year 1. Daily reading is vital to your child’s continued development and access to the curriculum. Your continued support in this is essential.

 

Spring 1 2022

This half-term our cross-curricular topic will be ‘Great Fires’. In English, we will be focusing on The Great Fire of London as well as poetry and writing our own recounts. This links to our History topic where we will be comparing the Great Fire of London with the Fire of Chatteris. In Maths, we will be exploring addition and subtraction within 20 and place value within 50. ‘Animals including humans’ is our Science focus. We will be identifying, naming, describing, and comparing a variety of common animals. We will also learn about the basic parts of the human body and will learn which body parts are associated with the senses. 

In P.E., during the half term, we will be looking at gymnastics and dance. PSHE will enable us to explore healthy and safer lifestyles and how to manage safety and risks. Reading and Phonics are a particular focus in Year 1. Daily reading is vital to your child’s continued development and access to the curriculum. Your continued support in this is essential.

Autumn 2 2021

Here is the children's Nativity:

This half term our topic will be ‘Great Britain’. In English, we will be focusing on Katie Morag’s ‘Island’ stories by Mairi Hedderwick, writing persuasive and explanation texts relating to the books. In Maths, we will be learning more about place value, addition and subtraction within 10 and Geometry (shape). ‘Seasonal Changes’ is our Science focus. We will be observing changes across the four seasons and observe and describe weather associated with the seasons and how day length varies. Reading and Phonics are a particular focus in Year 1.

Daily reading is vital to your child’s continued development and access to the curriculum. Your continued support in this is essential. Please try to hear your child read daily.

In PE, during the half term, we will be looking at multi-skills, throwing and catching. PSHE will enable us to explore ourselves, our relationships and emotions.

Autumn 1 2021

This half term our topic will be ‘Toys over Time’. Using the  book ‘Lost in the Toy Museum’  by David Lucas, we will write adventure stories and a chronological report. In Maths, we will be learning place value and addition and subtraction within 10. In Science, we will investigate Everyday Materials. We will identify and name a variety of everyday materials, including: wood, plastic, glass, metal, water, rock, brick, paper, elastic, fabric and foil. We will describe the simple physical properties of  a variety of everyday materials and compare and group together materials on the basis of their simple physical properties.

Reading and Phonics are a particular focus in Year 1. Daily reading is vital to your child’s continued development and access to the curriculum. Your continued support in this is essential.

In PE, during the first half term,  we will be looking at Playground Games and Gymnastics. PSHE will enable us to explore our emotions and find appropriate strategies to manage them.
