Following our assembly last week, children spent time on Thursday making bunting, learning more about VE Day and taking part in activities related to World War II.
We had a school picnic on the field, a shame it wasn't a bit warmer, surrounded by the bunting that we had made with 1940s music. It was a lovely school event, which the children seemed to really enjoy.
EYFS and Early Years
This week, we celebrated Victory in Europe Day. EYFS, Year 1 and Year 2 came together as a team and took part in different activities. The children moved between each of the three classrooms making flags, bunting, aeroplanes and also decorated biscuits in red, white and blue. We talked all about VE Day, when and why it took place, and how people celebrated on the streets. The children had a lovely picnic lunch on the field, where they proudly waved their flags. In the afternoon, the children flew their aeroplanes, did some dancing to war music and had a biscuit party. They could be heard saying "this is the best day ever!".
Year 3
To celebrate VE Day, year 3 completed a Victory in Europe day quiz, had a go at a tricky WW2 codebreaker maths challenge listening to war songs and made origami spitfires. We were also lucky enough to explore and handle a WW2 gas mask, ration book and a special coin made to commemorate the 50th anniversary. We discussed how this was celebrated 30 years ago and still remains a really important and special day. We also looked at a photograph of a soldier taken in 1945 and discussed how he unfortunately wasn't able to celebrate the end of the war because he was still in Germany.
Year 4
We had a great time learning all about VE Day, making bunting and really enjoyed our picnic lunch out on the field!
Year 5
To celebrate VE Day, Year 5 spent time learning about what VE day means and why it is important to recognise. We had lots of conversations about how different countries around the world celebrate the day. Then we created model spitfires (which were really challenging!) and flew them outside.
Year 6
Year 6 enjoyed creating some bunting for our VE Day picnic. They coloured in Union Jack flags and designed their own bunting using images relevant to the war like poppies.
